Sawt Falasteen - Gladys Knight to Reduce Tour Schedule Amid Health Concerns

Motown legend Gladys Knight is scaling back her touring commitments following growing concerns regarding her health and well-being during recent concerts. The announcement comes after reports of visible confusion and exhaustion at multiple shows, prompting her management to reassess the sustainability of her current schedule.

Knight has been performing solo and occasionally alongside fellow icon Smokey Robinson for several months. However, recent performances have drawn attention for instances where she appeared disoriented, stared blankly, or relied heavily on backup singers for vocals. A July 25 performance at the Hollywood Bowl was cited as particularly concerning, with sources indicating that Knight turned her back to the audience and attempted to walk off stage during "Midnight Train to Georgia," shaking off attempts by a backup singer to guide her back.

William McDowell, Knight’s husband and manager, acknowledged the difficulties surrounding the tour but emphasized that his wife remains determined to perform. He stated that Knight experiences fluctuating health days but maintains a strong desire to sing. "No one is ever gonna make me say, 'My wife is well,' but all she wants to do is sing," McDowell told TMZ.

While McDowell confirmed that Knight has not been diagnosed with dementia, he noted that the couple plans to consult a doctor in the near future to evaluate her condition. Some tour staff and attendees have expressed alarm; one source described the situation as "shameful," suggesting Knight was showing symptoms of dementia during an April stop in Las Vegas. Concertgoers in Detroit reportedly left early after witnessing Knight take multiple breaks and appear exhausted.

In a statement released shortly before this report, Knight addressed her decision to reduce her workload. "After much soul searching I've decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward," she wrote. She added that she plans to spend more time on projects with her husband and visiting her grandchildren.

McDowell indicated that Knight’s September 5 show would serve as a critical benchmark for her continued ability to tour. He stated that if she has a difficult performance, he will cancel the remaining dates scheduled through mid-November. To support her transition, McDowell is constructing a facility near their North Carolina home, allowing Knight to perform locally without enduring the rigors of constant travel.

Knight concluded her statement by thanking fans for their support over her five-decade career. "I'd like to take a moment, in advance, to thank all my fans over this last three quarters of a century for making a little girl's dream come true and supporting her every step of the way," she said. "I am immensely grateful to all of you and send your eternal love back to you. I hope to see your smiling faces out and about and on the road. God bless all of you and hope to see you soon."
