Sawt Falasteen - Data-centre opposition crosses US party lines

Opposition to large data-centre projects is becoming an electoral issue across the United States, with organisers reporting cooperation among voters who usually disagree along party lines. In Monrovia, Indiana, a proposed 550-acre Google development near a town of 1,600 drew objections during canvassing by Citizens Action Coalition.

The Guardian essay reported that more than 500 counties and municipalities had adopted bans or moratoriums and that several major races now feature data-centre policy. Concerns include electricity and water demand, noise, air pollution, utility bills, tax subsidies, eminent domain and nondisclosure agreements used during negotiations. Supporters cite construction work, but opponents say completed facilities create relatively few permanent jobs.

Politicians in both parties are adjusting their positions. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has moved from promoting AI development to criticising the sector, while Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers backed a one-year state moratorium. Democrats Sherrod Brown, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have opposed expansion or supported a national pause, but other Democratic officials continue to back projects. The issue remains politically unsettled as local groups press both parties for stronger restrictions.
