Coach Kovac extends contract at Dortmund until 2029
Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday announced a two-year extension to coach Niko Kovac's deal, keeping the 54-year-old at the club until 2029.
Kovac's new deal was considered a mere formality, given the stabilising effect he has had since arriving last year.
Former Croatia midfielder Kovac won the double with Bayern Munich but was considered an underwhelming appointment when he took over at Dortmund, particularly after a poor stint at Wolfsburg.
But he has revived his reputation at the Westfalenstadion.
Kovac took Dortmund on an unlikely run from mid-table to fourth spot and a crucial Champions League place after taking over midway through the 2024/25 season, before leading them to a runner-up finish last campaign.
In 53 Bundesliga games, Kovac is averaging 2.15 points per match, better than any previous coach at the eight-time German champions.
"We have initiated a clear development and laid important foundations for the future. We want to build on this," Kovac said in a statement.
"We see great potential and are convinced that together, with full conviction and great determination, we can achieve much more."
Dortmund sit second in the early table, two points clear of defending champions Bayern, and are unbeaten in the Bundesliga and Champions League this campaign.
"Niko works extremely meticulously and, thanks to his experience, exudes a calmness that benefits our team," sporting director Ole Book said.
Dortmund head to Norway to take on Bodo/Glimt on Wednesday before a trip to face Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Kovac's extension is the latest show of faith in Dortmund's current management, with managing director Carsten Cramer and board member for sport Lars Ricken extending their deals in September.
