Kyle Kirkwood would prefer IndyCar not return to Washington, D.C., after winning the Freedom 250, partly because a one-off event would leave him as the race’s only champion. The Andretti Global driver dominated Sunday’s contest, leading 128 of 147 laps before a crowd reported at more than 100,000.

Asked whether the series should stage the race again next year, Kirkwood described competing interests. His personal preference favors ending after the historic inaugural event, preserving his unique place in its record. From his team’s perspective, however, another race would be attractive because Andretti believes its cars are especially competitive on street circuits even though the organization has not fully understood why.

When pressed to choose, Kirkwood selected the personal argument against a return. He also questioned whether a later edition could reproduce the atmosphere of the first race, which was connected to a 250th-anniversary celebration and carried significance beyond an ordinary motorsports weekend.

Kirkwood described the Freedom 250 as an American event rather than simply a standard stop on the IndyCar calendar. That distinction, he suggested, came from the location, the scale of the crowd and the broader commemorative setting. A repeat held without the anniversary could feel less exceptional.

During the race itself, the driver had little opportunity to appreciate Washington’s landmarks. He said competitors focus on braking points, bumps, walls and other immediate references instead of looking beyond the circuit. Concentration on those details is essential on a temporary street course.

Only after finishing did Kirkwood allow himself to take in the setting. He looked toward the spectators, the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument and the city’s architecture, describing that moment as special.

His comments mixed humor about remaining the sole winner with a practical assessment of the event’s singular circumstances. IndyCar had not announced in the report whether Washington would return to a future schedule, leaving the prospect of a second race unresolved.
