After 18 wickets fell on a frenetic day one in Mackay, the hosts resumed at 165-8 in reply to the visitors' 64 all out.

A dogged Green brought up his eighth Test half-century shortly before stumps on Saturday and began the day on 51 with Nathan Lyon alongside him on 10.

Green, who scored a century during the first Test at Darwin -- which Bangladesh won by nine wickets -- kept the scoreboard moving early with quick singles.

Spin king Lyon was first to hit a boundary with a quality drive through mid-wicket off Shoriful, but Green was also in the zone and reached the ropes twice off Hasan Mahmud in the next over.

The allrounder came undone by an inswinging yorker from the impressive Shoriful that hit him on the toe with a review declaring him out lbw.

It ensured Shoriful ended with the best figures from a Bangladeshi bowler in an away Test.

A valiant Lyon brought up the 200 for Australia with a towering six off Taskin Ahmed and with Josh Hazlewood added 24 crucial runs for the last wicket.

The innings ended when Hazlewood skied Taijul Islam to Shadman Islam on six to leave Lyon not out 32.

After crashing to just 64 in their first innings, with Shoriful top-scoring on only 14, Bangladesh face a daunting task to save the Test.

Australian left-armer Mitchell Starc was on fire in the first innings, taking five wickets in just 22 balls to end with 6-12 from 10 overs.
