Sawt Falasteen - Jones says Japan making 'good progress' despite France defeat

Japan were outclassed by the Six Nations champions but showed flashes of their talent, scoring first-half tries through Kippei Ishida and Sojiro Otsuka.

The result meant Japan finished their first three Nations Championship matches with one win and two defeats, having beaten Italy in Tokyo and lost to Ireland in Newcastle, Australia.

Jones said playing France had been "a great lesson for us".

"We're working through how we can be the most effective attacking team, and that's a work in progress," said the Australian.

"I think we're making some good progress in terms of the consistency of our line and line speed in defence.

"And our breakdown work in the three games has been pretty good, so there are some real positives there for us."

Jones pinpointed France's dominance in the mauls and aerial contest as the main reasons for Japan's defeat.

"With the shorter stature of our wingers, we've got to find a way to compete in that area," he said of France's aerial dominance.

"I'm pleased with the commitment of the players today.

"I thought they stuck at it, played hard, played together, didn't give up."

Jones gave "full credit to France", who won two of their three Nations Championship games.

France lost 34-32 to New Zealand in Christchurch before thrashing Australia 42-26 in Brisbane.

"They're on the back of a long season," Jones said of France.

"They played with plenty of spirit and plenty of commitment as well."
